BlackBerry Basics: Email Setup 101

BlackBerry's introduction of its nimble BlackBerry® Curve smartphone raised the bar for cell phones with its ability to merge complex productivity tools with simple, everyday communication needs. Fast-forward to one year after its launch, and there's been an explosion in the number of everyday BlackBerry smartphone users.

As a result, there are good number of you carrying a BlackBerry; but, you may have yet to fully take advantage of its best features - including its key element: push email.

Gone are the days of manually logging into an email account to check your inbox (or dealing with the pesky, long load times that come with it). Instead, your BlackBerry can automatically "push" any new email messages directly to your phone in real time- new message notifications arrive right on your phone's home screen. Due to this convenience, push email has definitely become a favorite amongst BlackBerry owners.

So, why not set up or further optimize push email on your BlackBerry? Just follow these quick, simple instructions and you'll be on your way:

  1. Select the Email Settings application on your BlackBerry home screen (or select Setup Wizard: click here for Setup Wizard instructions).
  2. On the Login screen, click 'Create New Account'. Review the Terms & Conditions and click 'I agree'.
  3. From the home screen, select the "Email Settings" icon and click 'Add An Email Account'.
  4. Type the email address and password for the email account you'd like to add, and click 'Next'.
  5. You should see a validation screen which indicates a successful integration. If you do, click 'OK'.
No validation screen? Just re-enter your address and password to ensure there are no typos. If re-entering these details does not work, select 'I will provide the settings to add this email account'.
  1. Choose the type of email account to configure, and fill in the requested configuration information (most standard email accounts like GMail, Yahoo!, Hotmail, AOL, etc.will fall under the POP/IMAP option).
    • For POP/IMAP fill in your email account user name, password, and email server.
    - For GMail: click here
    - For Yahoo! (requires Yahoo! Mail Plus): click here
    • For Outlook/Exchange click here
    • For Notes/Domino, login to your BlackBerry Internet Service account to use BlackBerry Mail Connector
Once you've completed this process, new icons should appear on your BlackBerry home screen, representing the email accounts you've added. That's it! You are now ready to enjoy the convenience and power of BlackBerry push email.
